Yes, you can!
Painting your home's roof is a widely overlooked project that can make a big difference in the look of your home. Often times people think they are stuck with the color of their roof and have to base their exterior paint choices on the color of the roof. This isn't true! Roofs of all types including metal, tile and even shingle can be painted to create a great combination with exterior colors and make your home "pop".
Now, don't think you can just use a can of old fashioned exterior paint and slap it on your roof. It takes a special type of multi surface latex paint in order to get the job done. Not only does this paint provide the aesthetic look you want, it also has added benefits in the long term protection of your roof. We use a unique type of paint from Behr which provides excellent adhesion for all types of roofing materials and can be tinted to match a variety of colors. It is ideal for application on tile, metal, wood and asphalt shingles. The decorative coating even resists mildew and algae keeping your roof from getting that dirty brown or black look you see over time on older homes.
Cost is another huge benefit to painting over replacing. A new shingle roof can cost upwards of $8,000 to $10,000 with tile roofing racking up an even higher cost. Painting your older roof can save you big money with the average roof paint job coming in at around $2000.
The application method is also important. Since most roof materials are a rough, rugged surface, brushes and rollers are not usually the best bet. Using a paint sprayer helps to even coat the roof and get the paint into all of the small nooks and crannies created by the overlapping tiles/shingles. Even on metal surfaces, striations and grooves can make using a roller difficult unless you want the end result to be an uneven mess.
If you aren't happy with the way your roof looks you should really consider painting it over replacing it. It can save you big bucks, create the aesthetic look you're craving and protect your roof for years to come.
